The design of the child friendly community centre in Karantina was underpinned by a participatory approach ensuring input from children, caregivers, our partners and the local authorities around their needs, visions and aspirations for the space.

We conducted tailored activities for the two age groups of children who were identified as key users of the space: Preschoolers (3-5 years old) who participated together with their mothers, and young children (6-14 years old). It was very fascinating to see the inspiring ideas they shared with us, the attention to details and how mothers were supporting their children’s creative ideas.

During the activities we used several participatory tools to trigger imagination and express design ideas; this included storytelling, puppets, building blocks, drawing, 3D model making, plasticine and picture prompts.

“I remember when I built the cardboard model with my friends. My favourite area is the yellow room where we can all be seated in a circle together.”
